Tamrac 5275 Expedition 5

Reviews for Canon 300D / 10D / 20D / 30D / 40D / 50D / 5D / 7D

After comparing it in the store to the equally sized Lowepro MiniTrekker, I liked the Tamrac features better. It has thicker padding in shoulder straps, more rigid vertical dividers inside, metal D loops for attaching a shoulder strap (and they are mounted, along with the handle, on a supporting strap that goes completely around the bag), 4 side straps for clipping on extra pouches for holding various additional items (Tamrac makes a variety of these modular bags), lighter weight, military grade hardware, bungee cord webbing for strapping on a light rain coat, top inside pocket fits larger items, plus cheaper price.

It holds a lot for a medium size backpack, and contrary to what B&H Photo lists in their specs, it does have a nice wide waist belt with quick release buckle, and tripod straps.

The bag carries the following items:
Canon EOS 10D camera
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM (mounted)
Sigma Zoom Telephoto 100-300mm f/4 EX DG IF HSM (4.25x10" w/tripod collar & reversed hood)
Sigma 1.4x EX DG APO Teleconverter
Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX Aspherical DG DF
Flash - Sigma EF500DG super (2.5x3.5x8")
Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord 2
8 filters/adapter rings up to 82mm
82mm collapsable rubber lens hood
2 small battery chargers (for AA and Lithium)
8 AA batteries
2 Canon Lithium battery packs
misc eletrical cords
blower brush, cleaning fluid and kit, lens paper
6 Compact Flash Cards
collapsable reflectors/diffusers (10" diam)
camera & flash manuals, gray card

room to add another lens such as Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 USM Macro Lens (at that point will probably add the external filter case or/and medium case for flash - the Tamrac external modular accessory system (MAS) is a handy option for both expansion and not having to dig around inside the bag for smaller items)

My advice to anyone looking for a new bag - after reviewing websites for features, prices, etc of various bags, the most important thing I think is to visit a well stocked local camera store to actually see the various bags for real. This is the only way to really get a good impression of how well it will fit your equipment and to compare and judge the relative sizes and features of various bags. Also, know the length of your lenses and bring a tape measure or your equipment with you to check how well it fits. Some of the large backpacks are like suitcases and are extremely bulky and heavy and that's hard to judge from looking at a website. I actually ended up with a better price at the local shop than online, for both the item and for the tax vs shipping costs.

After about a year and a half using the bag, I'm still happy with it.  I've added to it though - to make room for two more lenses (a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens & Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM), I moved the flash unit, filters, etc, into a pair of Tamrac modular accessory pouches attached to the sides...

Reviews for Nikon D70 / D100 / D200 / D300 / D700

I've only had this bag for a few weeks but so far I'm very pleased with it.
The straps are very comfortable when it's loaded down (even with the 3021 attached) The metal D rings are stitched in extremely secure & there are plenty of anchor points to hang just about anything.

thanks to Rob for comments & photos.

I do some local photojournalism; this is an excellent bag for that. You can put all the lenses you need for that work in there; it's very compact. I cycle to most assignments; The bag sits very stable on my back. There are numerous straps to tighten the bag firmly to your back.
I also own a Manfrotto 055AB tripod (read: heavy and big ); I tried it with the tripod straps of the bag; it fits.
It's a great bag if all you need is a place to put your camera. Unfortunately it's not very suited for longer trips; you can't fit any food or other colleteral in there.
