Review #1

(Added 25th October 2008)

This is the M-Rock 517 "Yellowstone" holster/shoulder bag. Its very typical of other bags in this style. Theyre great for travelling light with just the camera and lens mounted. Although this one does have the option to add lens cases to it.

Photos contain:
Nikon D70 + Nikon 18-200mm VR F/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
Memory Cards
Spare Battery
Circular Polariser filter
Nikon remote

Camera and lens fits with plenty of room to spare.

---

Inside there are  two velcro attached supports so you can adjust the height of your camera depending on lens attached.

---

Comfortable mesh handle on top of the lid. There is also a small pocket ontop of the lid with just enough room for some memory cards or small cleaning items.

---

The base of the bag has some elasticated straps for support and extra loops for carrying the bag across your chest. These bags come with two shoulder straps which enable different carrying configurations.

---

Top flap buckle.

---

The flap opens away from your body to make it easy to remove the camera.

---

inside the top flap is a mesh pocket containing a lens cloth/lcd protector.

---

Once  the top flap is lifted you can gain access to the front pocket, Inside there's some a few small pouches for memory cards and enough room to fit a couple of filters. The supplied weather proof jacket also stores away in here. I did manage to squeeze a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 inside this but it was a bit tight.

---

The side of the bag has loops for the shoulder strap (centre) and also 2 rectangular loops at the front and back for attaching the lens cases.

--

Also a belt loop at the rear of the bag which will fit a normal belt or the M-Rock modular belt system.

With Lens Cases Attached

Adding these optional Lens cases gives enough room for the Nikon 180mm F2.8D ED-IF AF in the M-Rock 506
and the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 in the M-Rock 505

here the M-Rock 505 Lens Case with Tokina 12-24..

and the M-Rock 506 Lens Case with 180mm 2.8..

--

They are attached with velcro loops on either side..

The 505 lens case side and back pictured below. The lens cases come with their own lens cloths and weatherproof jackets. As well as attachments for shoulder or belt straps. I love the way the lens cases are identical miniatures of the 511. Even down to the pockets on the front and top of the bag. Although the outer top pocket on the 505 has about enough room for 1 SD card, I`m not kidding!

Front and side views of the 505 lens case.

The bags dimensions, slightly larger in reality then the official dimensions.

Overall a nice holster bag that looks good and with some decent storage room for such a small bag. And with the added advantage of being able to attach lens cases means that you can configure it how you want. It feels well designed and made with some nice touches like the Velcro camera supports inside the main compartment, plus the lens cloth and weatherproof jacket  hidden in the lid and front pockets can come in handy. Like the M-Rock 517 bag I also reviewed, I'd have preferred a hidden pocket designed just for the weatherproof jacket. Storing it in the front pocket with all your accessories you`ll have to be make sure the jacket is free of water or dust before storing it.
Only negative points are  that all the loops and clips are made of plastic. Although a bag this size that shouldn't be a problem with weight but I always prefer metal attachments as they last longer. Also I did find that the Nikon D70 flash hot shoe would sometimes fail on the main compartment sides ,where Velcro fasteners are used to hold the sides foam in place. It depends on how the Velcro supports are positioned, if they're high this isn't a problem. But too low and pulling the camera out quickly brought the bag with it on a few occasions.

Likes about the bag:
Well made, Nice looks. Plenty of storage options. Waterproof jacket and lens cloth. Lens case and modular belt attachments available.

Dislikes:
Plastic clips and loops. Camera hot shoe sometimes catches on Velcro flaps on main compartment inner sides.
