Tamrac 5405 Superlight 5

Reviews for Canon 300D / 10D / 20D / 30D / 40D / 50D / 5D / 7D

I was needing a small bag to house my 30D (no grip) for walking around and travelling by airplane; my Fotima shoulder bag and Canon backpack are too large for such ventures. After a little research I settled on the US$25 Tamrac Superlight 5 (model 5405). It is a slim-profile bag that fits comfortably over the shoulder or around the neck (curved and padded support), and sits nicely on the hip while walking. It also has a no-slip grip handle on the top of the bag. It has an outer, weather-sealed zippered document pouch and an inner zippered expandable pouch. There are also two other unzippered pouches, one on the back and one on the front, which is protected by the flap. There are three plastic quick-release latches, but the flap has Velcro, so I generally don't use the latches while walking around, so it has quick access. So far I've had the following setups for the bag.

1. Travel kit:
Sigma 17-70mm, Sigma 10-20mm , Sigma 30mm f/1.4 , Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro

2. Speed kit:
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm F/1.8 USM , Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro, Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM, Sigma 1.4x Extender, Sigma 2x Extender

3. Macro kit:
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro, Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM*, Kenko tubes, EM-140 macro ring flash

4. Flash kit:
Sigma 17-70mm, Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5, Canon EF 85mm F/1.8 USM , Sigma EF-500 DG Super Flash , Stofen Omni Bounce

* The 200 f/2.8L makes a great macro lens with tubes. Range of focus/magnification is limited, but it produces very nice images. Plus, my Sigma macro flash attaches to it.

I also carry an extra CF card, a CPL, an ND filter, a step-up ring and two macro flash adapters for the macro kit. I also have lens and sensor cleaning tools and an extra set of AA batteries. It also comes ready to use with Tamrac's add-on bags ("modular accessory system").

Its construction seems very good and should be durable. It's supposed to do a good job at keeping rain out, but I have not had an opportunity to test this. It comes with a 5 year warranty.

The one lens I have that can't fit in the bag is my Sigma 100-300 f/4 - it's just too long and I was aware of this before buying the bag. I am planning to get the 70-200 f/4L and although it's a bit longer than the specs for this bag, I think it will fit mounted to my camera. There's a little room left when I have my 200 f/2.8L on, and it's 1.4 inches shorter than the 70-200.

One thing I don't like about the bag is that I have to store the lens hoods in the bottom of the center section. The exception is my 30mm f/1.4; it fits nicely with its hood on backwards. I can't fit the hood for the 200L in it. I'll probably buy an external pouch to accommodate these. Also, I don't think a camera with a grip will fit in the bag, but since I don' t have one, I cannot say for sure.

In the first image the bag is closed and has the items of the Speed Kit above. The second image is same with flap open and camera and 105 f/2.8 macro removed. The left slot has the 200 f/2.8L, middle slot has the 2x TC below the partition, and the right slot has the 30mm below a partition and the 85mm on top. For both, the 1.4x TC is in the expandable zippered pouch, along with CPL, ND and extra CF card. There's also room for extra batteries in this pouch as well; AA or camera. I usually keep the lens and sensor cleaning kits in the unzippered pouch in front of the zippered one.
