I bought the Domke F1X bag about 10 years ago. Since then, I've gone through a number of bags trying to find exactly the right bag for my needs. I've tried Tamrac, Lowepro, Kata, etc. It wasn't until recently that I actually took my old Domke out of the closet and sat it on the floor to look at it. I realized that I had the exact bag I needed all along.
I got online and looked at the Domke site, and realized that this could be the most versatile bag I've ever owned if I simply ordered the exact insert I needed. So, after a slight investment, I had exactly what I needed: (1)a bag that could hold a lot of gear; (2) a bag that was well-organized and easily accesible; (3)a bag that was comfortable on my shoulder for an extended period of time, and (4) a bag that was virtually indestructible.
To test the capacity of the bag, I decided to stuff it with as much gear as I could manage in a relatively short period of time. To this end, I managed to put the following in the bag:
-Nikon D200 body
-Nikon D70 body
-Nikon 28-70 2.8 lens (with hood reversed)
-Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens
-Nikon 10.5mm fisheye lens
-Nikon SB-800 flash
-Nikon 70-200 2.8VR lens
-Nikon Coolwalker
All of these items fit easily into the main compartment. Had I needed more space, there are 2 front and 2 side pockets that could have easily accommodated any of the items except the 70-200 or the 28-70 lenses.
A rear/back zippered pocket runs the length of the bag and could easily hold a 300mm f/4 lens. However, I use this for manuals, guides, CDs, etc. The pockets undet the flap are perfect for holding extra batteries, memory cards, tripod quick-release plates, etc. The 2-inch strap is not only comfortable, but provides quite a measure of security against accidental breakage. In other words, it's a typical Domke.
In conclusion, if you're looking for a bag that can carry a lot of gear for an extended shoot, this is your bag. I typically store most of my gear in mine; although for shorter shoots, I also rely on my Kiesel Messenger 400 bag. These two bags have proven to be the most reliable, versatile, functional, and easily accesible bags I have found to date.
