Pros: Good size, low profile, comfortable
Cons: None of any significance

I have several Domke bags that I use to various degrees, but with this one it was love at first sight. Just small enough to carry without feeling like a pack horse, just big enough to take as much equipment that you could comfortable carry. Although the canvas varieties of Domke bags have their own special charm they also have the unfortunate habit of soaking up water like a sponge, and even if the water doesn’t penetrate the bag you are still left with a wet bag. The ballistic nylon, although not actually waterproof, doesn’t suffer so much from this. Both comfortable to carry and low profile, its an ideal bag to take out in all weathers. The end pockets are larger than most and can easily carry a spare camera body. The removal padding in the pockets is an excellent addition, and a welcome change to the standard unpadded pockets found in other Domke bags.

The bag is big enough to take a couple of standard slr cameras with zoom lenses attached, which is usually as much as I want to take. There’s ample room in the pockets for a flash gun, extra lenses or camera body, or any other accessories you might want to take. If you really need more room than this you can always look towards the larger versions of this model, the J1 and J2.

Most people list the maximum amount of equipment they can get into their bags, but I prefer to try and leave at least a couple of pockets free for other items that you may want to carry, which can mean anything from tissue papers to headache tablets. A pint drinking flask can easily fit into one of the end pockets, and I have found that whether I’m just out and about taking photographs or working professionally this is an essential part on my kit, especially on a hot day.

No bag is perfect for every assignment, and there are times when I would prefer the Domke F6 when I want to carry little more than a camera, the Domke F1x if I have to carry a full kit, or something from the Billingham range if I know its going to be really wet weather and want something really waterproof. However, within the boundaries of normal use, this is as close as I expect to come to the perfect bag.
